Charango

Lima, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu & Tambopata 11 nights

Here we experience some of the highlights of Southern Peru, focusing on Lima, Cusco, The Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and the rainforest of the Tambopata Reserve at Puerto Maldonado. This is a comfortable trip using excellent quality accommodation, including a number of activities and the services of a local representative.

Day 1 - We fly to Lima in the morning from London Gatwick via Madrid, arriving in the evening. Our representative will meet and transfer you from the airport to the Jose Antonio Hotel, assist with check in and brief you on your itinerary.

Day 2 - In the morning we drive just out of the city to the fascinating Pachamac Sanctuary, an ancient ceremonial temple site dedicated to the sun and moon. After the visit lunch will be provided at the Casa Hacienda Los Ficus, where there will also be the opportunity to see the fine Paso horses bred here. In the evening we take a tour of the city and its monuments, which after dark are attractively illuminated. The tour is rounded off with a traditional Pisco Sour cocktail followed by dinner at La Huaca Pucllana Restaurant.

Day 3 - Morning transfer to Jorge Chavez airport for flight to Cusco, transfer on arrival to Hotel Casa Andina Private Collection Cusco, a high quality property in the heart of the city. Taking it easy for the remainder of the morning to acclimatise to the high altitude, we make a sightseeing tour of Cusco and its environs in the afternoon, visiting the Plaza de Armas and Cathedral, the Koricancha Temple, the ruins of the Kenko Amphitheatre, Tambomachay, Puca Pucara and Sacsayhuaman. Evening dinner and folkloric show at a local restaurant.

Day 4 - Driving out to the Sacred Valley we visit the textile centre of Awanacancha and see something of the ancient techniques which are kept alive here. Then we continue to Pisac, firstly exploring the archaeological complex then visiting the famous market where there will be bargaining opportunities. After lunch we go to the fortress of Ollantaytambo, a bastion of Inca resistance to the conquistadores before returning to Cusco.

Day 5 - After breakfast in Cusco we drive about 20 minutes to Pachar for a river rafting adventure in the Sacred Valley of the Incas. This begins with a briefing on the equipment and safety, then after a practice run on a smooth portion of the river we undertake some progressively challenging rapids, culminating with "El Resbaladero" (the slide), a fairly strong class III example with waves and eddies. Picnic lunch against the backdrop of the Sacred Valley, after which we join up with our Paso Fino horses and their muleteers. These beautiful horses are known for their smooth gait, and after familiarisation, we ride the trail for around 2 hours on the left bank of the Urubamba river, passing Andean rural communities and terraced landscapes. We meet our transport at Ollantaytambo for the journey to the Hotel Casa Andina Private Collection Sacred Valley.

Day 6 - Transfer to station at Ollantaytambo for Vistadome train to Aguas Calientes, this is a rail journey of about 90 minutes aboard a comfortable train with windows specially designed to provide a panoramic view of the Andean landscape as we gradually descend to this more subtropical area. Machu Picchu is one of the great archaeological sites of the world and a crowning achievement of the Inca empire which has miraculously survived to the present day. It presents an iconic image of Peru with its combination of nature and artifice. The journey is completed with a 20 minute journey up to the citadel where there will be a guided tour of the many outstanding features followed by a buffet lunch at the Machu Picchu Sanctuary Lodge. We overnight in Aguas Calientes at the excellent Inti Inn Machu Picchu.

Day 7 - Morning at leisure, time to explore Aguas Calientes and experience its thermal springs, revisit the citadel or for the adventurous, weather permitting, to climb Huayna Picchu for amazing views. Afternoon train from Aguas Calientes to Cusco and transfer to Hotel Casa Andina Private Collection for evening at leisure.

Day 8 - Morning transfer to Cusco airport for the one hour flight to Puerto Maldonado for Tambopata National Reserve. The Manu National Park and Tambopata National Reserve are Peru's richest ecological areas with an enormous diversity of flora and fauna, some not yet catalogued. There are hundreds of species of birds, insects, cats, monkeys, reptiles and fish, as well as thousands of plants and flowers. The optimum period to visit is from May through October, and to do justice to the reserve and to properly reward the journey, we spend 3 nights on a full board basis at the beautiful Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica which blends comfort with an authentic experience of the rainforest. From Puerto Maldonado airport we travel the short distance to the wharf to embark on the 45 minute boat ride into the rainforest along the Madre de Dios River to the lodge. Following a short briefing and time to settle into the lovely cabana, lunch is served. Then after a little rest time we prepare for an afternoon excursion. Usually on the first day we take a guided walk of the trail system around the lodge to familiarise with this wonderful environment, then with the onset of twilight take a boat ride downriver to witness the changes to the wildlife as day becomes night. Cocktails and then dinner are served, followed by the chance to socialize or retire to the unique sounds of the rainforest.

Day 9 - Breakfast is available from 05.30am until 09.30am to cater for a broad range of inclinations, and excursions are optional at Inkaterra Reserva, but we recommend the visit by canoe to the Sandoval Lake, home to colourful wildlife such as the giant river otter, red howler monkeys and side neck turtles. After lunch you can visit the Inkaterra Canopy, 29 metres above ground, stretching over a quarter of a mile, including eight observation platforms. The time on the canopy can be extended to experience the beauty of the sunset.

Day 10 - Visit to Gamitana Creek: 45 minutes by boat from the lodge there is the opportunity to explore the rainforest more intimately in this winding, dark water creek, home to piranha, caiman, turtles and many species of bird. Canoe back downstream to visit Gamitana Farm for picnic lunch and short farm visit to see how fruit and vegetables are raised in this environment. Afternoon free to enjoy spa offering traditional massage and other therapies (cost not included in tour price).

Day 11 - After breakfast, return by boat to Puerto Maldonado for flight to Lima, nearly three hours (with a stop in Cusco). Transfer on arrival in Lima to Jose Antonio Hotel for the night, remainder of day at leisure.

Day 12 - At leisure until mid/late afternoon, then transfer to airport for overnight flight back to Madrid and onward connection to London Gatwick.
