Iquitos

Sample image

Considered the Capital of the Amazon, Iquitos is the starting point for any visit to the Peruvian Amazon. This is a hot, bustling city, filled with traders of lumber and other raw materials, and tourists wishing to explore the luscious, tropical rainforest along the banks of the Amazon river.

This area has wide river flood beds that are covered with rainwater and usually swamped in the summer. Iquitos is filled with floating homes that rise and fall as the waters do. Boat tours of Belen are popular during the wet season as this is the only way to access this area. The Belen market and "medicine" lane are some of the must see attractions in Iquitos.

There are many other rivers to explore apart from the mighty Amazon, as well as lagoons and lakes, offering a large variety of vegetation and animal species and of course beautiful landscapes.
